Principal's Weekly Blog October 30
What an exciting October! We have lots of things to celebrate here at W.E. Graham! Last week we had 8 senior students (grades 8-10) attend the Student Voice Conference in Creston where the topic was Mental Health. This was a great way for our students to network with students around the district and talk about mental health issues that mattered to them. I am so proud of our group for their participation, particularly Rielle McCallum who was one of only 4 students in the district who was on the panel in front of approximately 200 other students. They all represented our school with pride and passion!
There are lots of fun things happening in the classroom, too! Ms. SIgny was working with the OELP class studying tectonic plates. The students were able to complete a hands-on experiment using icing and graham crackers. What a fun way to learn about Science and an excellent means to engaging students in their learning!
Tomorrow is Halloween and a letter was sent out earlier regarding expectations for costumes. If you are not sure if your child's costume is appropriate for school, please contact me directly. The students will participate in a parade tomorrow afternoon at 2 and then have a bit of a dance before the end of the day.
Yes, I started FSA (foundation skills assessment) testing with grade 4 students. The students complete assessments in both literacy and numeracy, both online and on paper. This information does not count toward student report cards but rather helps to inform teaching practice and what areas need to be targeted in the classrooms moving forward.
This month we introduced PBIS, which is Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports.
It’s a school-wide approach to help all students succeed — both academically and socially — by creating a positive, safe, and predictable learning environment.
🧠 The Big Idea
Instead of only focusing on what students do wrong, PBIS focuses on teaching and encouraging positive behavior. Just like schools teach math or reading, they also teach expectations for how students should act in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and playgrounds.
🏫 How It Works
Set Clear Expectations:
Schools decide on a few key values (like “Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe”).
Teach Behaviors:
Teachers show students what those values look like in different situations.
Acknowledge Positive Behavior:
When students make good choices, they are recognized or rewarded — often with praise, points, or small incentives.
Provide Support When Needed:
If a student struggles, staff use positive strategies and additional support instead of punishment alone.
💬 Why It Matters
Creates a positive school climate
Helps students feel safe and supported
Reduces disruptive behavior and discipline issues
Improves academic and social success
🤝 How Parents Can Help
Talk about your child’s school expectations at home.
Praise positive behavior (“I like how you were responsible with your homework!”).
Communicate with teachers about PBIS goals and celebrations.
Each month, we focus on a new theme. This month's theme is Respect and Kindness. During our November assembly, we will discuss a new theme and focus. Teachers reinforce these themes and concepts in the classroom.
As the weather is changing, please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately. It is quite cool in the morning so please have your child wear a coat or heavy sweater.
Have a great week and a Happy Halloween!
